You’d have to been around in the 1950’s and 60’s to know how serious people took these types of films. It is better to feel like there is something you can do to avoid annihilation and if dodging a nuclear blast, by diving under your desk, made you feel better and it theoretically increased your chances of survival, then by gum you did it.
